Insights and reflections from the 2024 CILIP Conference bursary recipients August 29, 2024 By Taylor Macdonald The 2024 CILIP Conference, hosted in Birmingham, offered a wealth of knowledge and networking opportunities to our four bursary recipients. These individuals were able to attend and fully immerse themselves in the experience, which proved invaluable throughout various stages of their careers. A common theme among all recipients was the emphasis on networking and professional growth. Each participant highlighted how the conference facilitated meaningful connections with fellow professionals, offering opportunities to learn from diverse experiences and gain new perspectives that would be beneficial to their careers. The chance to engage with peers and industry leaders not only expanded their professional networks but also served to inspire and solidify their career aspirations. Aylwyn Napier from University of Glasgow noted the welcoming atmosphere of the CILIP Conference, praising the event’s efficiency and clarity. He found it particularly beneficial to engage with professionals across the GLAM/R sector, stating that the conference made him feel like a peer rather than an outsider. The variety of sessions, ranging from AI and Digital Humanities to Intellectual Freedom, provided him with a deeper understanding of key topics and the opportunity to network with passionate, forward-thinking professionals. Héloïse Atkinson a Knowledge Assistant at Withersworldwide, was especially impressed by the focus on intellectual freedom. She found the knowledge management seminars to be diverse and thought-provoking, offering her new insights on how to enhance her role. Héloïse also valued the networking opportunities, which enabled her to connect with professionals from various sectors and explore different career pathways. Frances Harrison reflected on how the CILIP Conference reignited her passion for libraries and information services. As a Library and Information Officer for Newcastle Libraries, Frances found the sessions on Inclusive Libraries and Information Literacy particularly inspiring. She also appreciated the chance to connect with a broad spectrum of professionals, from academic librarians to private sector knowledge managers, which opened her eyes to new possibilities within the library sector and reinforced her career objectives. The 2024 CILIP Conference was a transformative experience for these bursary recipients. Their reflections highlight the significance of these opportunities for professional development, networking, and the reinforcement of career ambitions. As one attendee wrote, “I would most definitely attend another CILIP conference; it was a wonderful opportunity, and I am extremely grateful that the bursary enabled me to attend and learn as much as I did.” These insights highlight the importance of continued investment in the professional development of individuals within the library and information management sectors, ensuring that the passion for knowledge, literacy, and cultural heritage continues to flourish.
