Our leadership Team

Our Senior Leadership Team oversees the daily operation of the company and ensures we meet the targets and standards set by the Board. Each Director is responsible for an area of the business and the Team meets regularly to discuss strategy.

Mat Pfleger – Chief Executive

Mat Pfleger is the Chief Executive of CLA and has over 20 years experience in leadership roles across the rights and content industries. As part of the leadership team at CLA, Mat has evolved CLA to become a digital and customer focused business that simplifies copyright for both users and creators of content.


Sarosh Daruwala – Finance Director

Sarosh qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1999 with Kingston Smith, a mid tier UK accounting practice. After qualifying he gained industry experience working for Enron as a Finance Specialist and then for Right Managements Consultants Ltd as an European Controller. Experience was then gained managing finance teams for both UK and EMEA accounts functions at small and medium sized business services companies where the focus of the work was transforming an underperforming finance function and providing financial insight to business decisions and strategy. Sarosh joined CLA as the Head of Finance in 2016 and is accountable for the full finance function which includes budgeting, forecasting, statutory accounts and internal controls.

Eela Devani

Eela Devani – Chief Product and Data Officer

Eela Devani joined CLA in 2015. Eela has more than 25 years experience in publishing and has spent the last 15 years in Digital, working for brands including, Lexis Nexis, and Bloomsbury Publishing. During her time at Bloomsbury Publishing Eela launched 13 products that have transformed successful print brands into multichannel businesses and sustainable revenue streams. 

Eela leads the development of CLA’s commercial and data strategy as CLA becomes a leading digital service provider.

Phil Hearne - Director of Education

Phil Hearne – Director of Education

Phil was appointed CLA Director of Education in September 2018.  

Phil’s background is in education, starting as a history teacher and moving on to create one of the first academies in the country, leading and supporting the transformation a failing academy into an outstanding one and successfully managing and improving the outcomes for seven primary schools, three special schools and a high school whilst managing them into one single 3-19 academy (physically reducing from 11 sites to 5 with three new builds).

Latterly, he carved out a niche as one of the leading Consultant & Interim Principals in the secondary education sector; specialising in working with challenging schools.

Phil has worked with universities in the UK and Australia, addressed several conferences, co-authored two books on education and is a trained coach.

Tony Johnson –  Chief Technology Officer

Tony Johnson joined CLA in April 2021 as Chief Technology Officer.  Tony has over 20 years experience operating in senior Technology leadership roles.  He is a highly commercial technologist who has delivered major technology and digital transformation across large scale global organisations in both the Retail and Media sectors.  Most recently, as Senior Vice President, International IT at 20th Century Fox he oversaw the digital transformation of Fox’s international sales, marketing and distribution businesses.  As CTO at CLA, Tony is responsible for designing the Technology strategy and roadmap, with a focus on delivering customer-centric technology solutions that are pivotal to the overall success of the organisation.

Justin has over 20 years of experience in successfully leading and managing commercial departments in the rights and licensing space.

In the last 20 years, Justin has worked for some of the largest and cutting edge media content organisations including, Getty Images, Press Association and News Corp-owned Storyful. 

Justin joined CLA in July 2020, as CLA Sales Director. He leads the Sales, Customer Service, Public and International teams. He is helping to shape the commercial strategy for sales, retention and customer service.  


Andy Martin – HR Director

Andy Martin has over 20 years of experience as an HR practitioner, with particular expertise in employee relations and employment law-related matters. 

He spent the initial part of his career at London Underground, gaining exposure to high level trade union meetings and negotiations in its Employee Relations department before moving to a generalist role with the District Line. Following this period, Andy held a variety of HR roles at the Royal Opera House, the Commission for Racial Equality as well as, a housing association and two employers’ trade bodies. 

Andy joined CLA in April 2009, as HR Manager, becoming HR Director in August 2013. He is accountable for the HR and Administration functions within CLA including the development of HR strategy, recruitment, employee relations and corporate statutory obligations such as Health & Safety.


Heather Walmsley – Head of Operations

Heather Walmsley has more than 20 years’ operational experience of working with data and creating print and online products in the publishing industry. She has held a number of management and project management roles at various trade, legal and STM publishers, including Butterworth-Heinemann (now part of Elsevier) and Walker Books. At Sweet & Maxwell she delivered their first legal online publications. She joined CLA in 2009, taking on responsibility for the bibliographic database, with more than new 400,000 entries added each year. In 2012 she brought together the Operations team in London and the field to be accountable for the end-to-end processes for delivering royalty data. Heathers’ teams collect, process and analyse data across all sectors to allow royalties to be paid each year to copyright owners: authors, publishers and visual artists in the UK and around the world. Heather is helping to shape the three year digital transformation strategy across Operations.
