These FAQs explain the new CLA Workplace Generative AI permissions added to CLA licences. They cover why these permissions were introduced, what type of content can be used as prompts, and the limits on using AI-generated outputs both internally and externally.
No. Because the terms of use of most social media platforms permit the use of uploaded content for the purposes of developing, training and/or fine-tuning their generative AI systems, posting outputs generated under the CLA licence on social media is likely to be in breach of the licence terms that prohibit this use.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has ever increasingly become a buzzword worldwide, but there are specific subsets of AI that has key differences. Non-generative, or discriminative, AI can make decisions based on analysing data and following a specific set of rules. Examples include identifying novel protein combinations in the process of developing new drugs, or recognising facial features at passport control in airports. They don’t create anything new. Generative AI is a subset of AI which is seen as the next generation of artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional AI, generative AI can create something new based on the information that it was provided. The main difference between non-generative AI and generative AI is that non-generative AI systems analyse data and make predictions, whereas generative AI goes beyond this to create new content based on its training data. CLA’s new permissions specifically cover the use of certain generative AI tools under the CLA licence.

When AI outputs generated using this licence are used externally, you need to cite or reference the published content used as a prompt.
Yes, there are limits. For example, AI outputs generated using this licence may not be used externally when they form part of your organisation’s products or services, for example in a chatbot or summarisation service. Additionally, AI-generated outputs should not be used to substitute for original creative works, or to compete with published works. Please see explanatory leaflets and the licence terms for more information.
